Updated: November 2026
In September 2026, ChatGPT started showing ads to Malaysian users. Within a week, agencies were selling “ChatGPT Ads management” packages to anyone who would listen.
We run ChatGPT Ads training, so we did the obvious thing first. We put our own money in. RM139.75, four ads, the whole of October.
The clicks were cheap. The leads were zero. Here is every number, what we think went wrong, and who we believe these ads actually suit.
In KelC Academy’s October 2026 test, ChatGPT Ads in Malaysia cost RM2.59 per click and RM47 per 1,000 impressions, but RM140 of spend produced 54 clicks and zero training enquiries, most likely because the ads only reach ChatGPT’s Free and Go users.

How much did our ChatGPT Ads test cost?
We ran one campaign with four ads from 1 to 31 October 2026, all pointing to our corporate AI training pages. These are the totals straight from ChatGPT Ads Manager:
| Metric | Result |
|---|---|
| Total spend | RM139.75 |
| Impressions | 2,946 |
| Clicks | 54 |
| Click-through rate | 1.83% |
| Average cost per click | RM2.59 |
| Average cost per 1,000 impressions | RM47.44 |
| Training enquiries | 0 |
Google Analytics recorded 58 visits from these ads in the same month. That small gap with the 54 clicks is normal: some people came back a second time.
What did each ad cost?
Not every ad performed the same. One clearly beat the others:
| Ad | Creative | Impressions | Clicks | CTR | Cost per click |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| In-House AI Training | Real photo of our class | 1,460 | 33 | 2.26% | RM2.52 |
| ChatGPT Ads workshop | Designed graphic | 886 | 15 | 1.69% | RM2.84 |
| Corporate AI Training | Designed graphic | 313 | 4 | 1.28% | RM2.29 |
| Build an AI-Ready Team | Designed graphic | 287 | 2 | 0.70% | RM2.40 |
The ad with a real photo from one of our training sessions took 61% of all clicks. Its click rate was about 1.6 times higher than the three designed graphics combined. People inside a chat seem to trust a real room full of real people more than a polished banner.
Is RM2.59 a click expensive?
No. For a B2B service in Malaysia, RM2–3 a click is cheap. Many “corporate training” keywords on Google cost far more, and Ubersuggest shows advertisers bidding over RM100 a click on the term “chatgpt ads” itself.
So cost was never the problem. Fit was.
Why did cheap clicks bring zero leads?
The traffic simply didn’t behave like buyers. Compared with our Google Ads visitors in the same month:
| ChatGPT Ads visitors | Google Ads visitors | |
|---|---|---|
| Engaged sessions | 31% | 56% |
| Average engaged time | 14 seconds | 26 seconds |
| Enquiries | 0 | 12 |
Fourteen seconds is enough to glance at a page and leave. It isn’t enough to read a course outline.
Who actually sees ChatGPT Ads?
This is the part most agency guides skip. ChatGPT Ads are shown to adult users on the Free and Go plans, and in logged-out sessions. People on Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise plans do not see ads.
Now think about who buys corporate AI training in Malaysia. It’s usually an HR manager, an L&D lead or a director. Some of them use ChatGPT through a paid personal plan or a company Business or Enterprise account. Many of the people we most want to reach may not see these ads at all.
Who most likely saw our ads? Free-plan users, such as students, job seekers and people exploring AI for personal use. Many clicked out of curiosity, and left.
We can’t prove this from ad data alone, because Ads Manager doesn’t tell you which plan a user is on. But it is the explanation that best fits the numbers.
Did tracking fail?
It’s the first thing we looked at. Visits arrived in Google Analytics correctly, labelled as ChatGPT paid traffic, and our Google Ads leads came through the same website and the same WhatsApp button in the same month. So the traffic did arrive. It just didn’t turn into enquiries.
Who are ChatGPT Ads good for in Malaysia?
There is no right or wrong channel. It depends on who your buyer is and which ChatGPT plan they’re likely to use. This is one month of data from one business, so treat it as a starting point, not a verdict.
Likely a good fit
- Consumer products and e-commerce. Skincare, gadgets, home products. Free-plan users are your actual customers.
- Low-ticket services. Tuition, fitness classes and local services, where a quick click can become a quick booking.
- Courses for individuals. Students and job seekers are exactly who uses the free plan.
- Brands testing awareness. RM47 per 1,000 impressions is a cheap way to be seen in a new channel.
Likely a weaker fit (for now)
- B2B services sold to managers and directors. Corporate training, consulting, software for companies. Test carefully and judge on enquiries, not clicks.
- High-ticket decisions that need a committee. The person who clicks is rarely the person who signs.
- Businesses that need leads this month. It’s a new channel with little targeting history. Expect to learn, not to scale.
For example, a Puchong skincare brand selling a RM89 serum could do well here. Its buyers are likely on the free plan, asking ChatGPT “best serum for oily skin Malaysia”. A Shah Alam company selling RM15,000 HR software may see something closer to our result: cheap clicks, few buyers.
Should you run ChatGPT Ads in-house or hire an agency?
Most of the Malaysian articles about ChatGPT Ads are written by agencies, and they all end the same way: pay us to run it.
Here’s how we’d decide:
| Run it in-house | Hire an agency | |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly cost | Ad spend only | Ad spend + management fee |
| Learning stays with you | Yes | Mostly with the agency |
| Speed to start | 1–2 days once your team is trained | Depends on onboarding |
| Best when | You want to test before committing | You already know the channel works for you |
With a channel this new, nobody has years of results. Our view is to test it yourself with a small, capped budget first. Pay for management only after the numbers prove there’s something worth managing.
How should you test ChatGPT Ads without wasting money?
If you still want to try, and for many consumer brands you should, this is the plan we’d follow now.
Week 1: set up properly
- Verify your business account a few days early. Verification can take time.
- Install conversion tracking and add UTM tags, so every visit shows up cleanly in Google Analytics.
- Write context hints that describe your buyer’s situation, not your product. “HR manager planning staff AI training” beats “AI course”.
- Use a real photo. In our test, it took 61% of the clicks.
Month 1: cap the budget and compare
- Set a hard cap. Ours was RM140 for the month, around RM4.50 a day.
- Compare against your best channel on the same three numbers: cost per click, engaged time and cost per lead.
- Ignore click-through rate on its own. Ours looked healthy at 1.83% and still produced nothing.
Quarter 1: scale or stop
- Scale only if the cost per qualified lead is close to your Google or Meta ads.
- Stop if engaged time stays under 20 seconds after two rounds of changing your context hints.
- Re-test every few months. Who sees ads, and how targeting works, will keep changing.
What we’re doing next
We are not scaling ChatGPT Ads for corporate training yet. Our next test changes two things: context hints aimed at decision-makers, and only real class photos. If engaged time doesn’t move, we pause and keep our budget on Google Ads, where our buyers are today.
We’ll update this page with the results.
Is ChatGPT Ads training HRD Corp claimable?
Yes. KelC Creative Sdn Bhd (961920U) is a registered HRD Corp training provider, and our 1-day ChatGPT Ads training is claimable under SBL-Khas. Your team learns to set up, track and test the channel properly, including the scale-or-stop rules above, so you decide with your own numbers instead of an agency’s pitch.
Submit your HRD Corp application before the training date. We provide the full documentation.
Key Learning
ChatGPT Ads in Malaysia are cheap to test: we paid RM2.59 a click. But cheap clicks only pay off if your buyer is likely to be on ChatGPT’s free plan. Before spending, ask one question: does my customer use free ChatGPT? If yes, test it. If your buyers are managers on paid or company plans, expect results closer to ours.
Frequently asked questions
In our October 2026 test, the average was RM2.59 per click and RM47.44 per 1,000 impressions. Your cost will vary with your industry, bid and how relevant your ads are, because ChatGPT Ads run on an auction.
The platform allows very small daily budgets, but a tiny budget won’t teach you much. We’d plan at least RM140 to RM300 for a first month, enough for 50 to 100 clicks to judge the traffic.
Adult users on ChatGPT’s Free and Go plans, and logged-out users. People on Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise plans do not see ads.
Neither is better for everyone. In our test, Google Ads visitors engaged almost twice as long and produced 12 enquiries, while ChatGPT Ads produced none. For consumer brands whose customers use free ChatGPT, the result may be very different.
No. Ads are labelled as sponsored and shown separately below the answer. OpenAI states that advertising does not influence ChatGPT’s responses.
